The SGI Canada Caledon Centre for Culture
and Education was established in July 1996 as both a conference
centre for SGI Canada members and as a facility for various
events in cooperation with the local community, peace, cultural
and educational institutions, and other like-minded organizations
such as NGOs and groups promoting ecological sustainability.
Located on 54.25 hectares of wooded land in
the scenic Caledon Hills northwest of Toronto, the SGI Canada
Caledon Centre protects sensitive waterways and conservation
land. Great care is taken to preserve the natural beauty and
diverse wildlife on the property. Volunteers from SGI Canada
regularly work with the Credit Valley Conservation Authority
to help plant trees in the neighbouring areas.
Weekend and extended-weekend conferences are
held at the Caledon Centre from spring through autumn, with
an average of 60 participants attending from across Canada.
Cultural events such as the annual Headwaters Arts Festival
exhibition are hosted at the centre, as well as various public
lectures and seminars by groups such as the Caledon Countryside
Alliance.
The Caledon Centre has become a highly valued
part of the community. When visitors come they are invariably
touched by the openness and warmth of the SGI Canada staff and
volunteers, as well as by the architecture, which is modern,
simple, and allows views of the scenery from all sides.
The SGI members who attend conferences are
able to meet new friends from across the country and to deepen
their understanding and practice of Buddhism. The hills and
trees of the Caledon Centre provide an ideal setting to revitalize,
to learn, and to connect with friends.
